Who it is for
When everyday life needs a helping hand.
Basic care is for anyone who can no longer manage some everyday tasks alone – temporarily or for the long term. For yourself or for someone close to you.
-
In later life
When strength or mobility decline and daily personal care becomes tiring.
-
After illness or an accident
When you are recovering at home and need support for a while.
-
With long-term care needs
When you depend on help but still want to live at home on your own terms.
-
For children too
There is no age limit – we care for children too.
- Guests visiting the region are cared for, provided there is a doctor’s prescription.
What it includes
Personal care – as independent as possible.
We take your daily habits into account from the very first consultation. Your care is tailored to you personally: we help where you need help – and support you in doing what you can still do yourself.

Typical basic care services, for example:
- Help with personal and oral hygiene, washing and showering
- Dressing and undressing, including putting on compression stockings
- Support with eating and drinking
- Exercises and mobilisation, for example getting up and walking
- Making the bed and positioning, preventing pressure sores
- Bandaging the legs
We decide together with you exactly which services you will receive during the needs assessment.

- Deductible (franchise)
- The amount you pay yourself each calendar year before basic insurance starts covering costs. You chose the amount with your health insurer.
- Co-payment (Selbstbehalt)
- Once you have paid your deductible, you contribute 10 per cent of any further costs – up to an annual maximum.
- Residual financing
- Whatever is not covered by health insurance and the patient contribution is paid by the public sector – depending on the canton, by your municipality of residence or by the canton.
Frequently asked questions
Questions about basic care
What does Spitex basic care include?
Basic care means support with everyday tasks that you can no longer manage yourself – such as personal and oral hygiene, dressing and undressing, eating and drinking, moving about and positioning. We work out exactly what you need in your home.
Does health insurance pay for basic care?
Yes. Basic care is a benefit of compulsory basic health insurance, and we are recognised by all Swiss health insurers. You pay a patient contribution per day, the amount of which is set by your canton, as well as your deductible (franchise) and co-payment (Selbstbehalt). Children and young people under 18 pay no patient contribution.
Do I need a doctor’s prescription for basic care?
Since 1 July 2024, not necessarily. The basis is a needs assessment by a qualified nurse. Treatment care – such as injections or dressings – still requires a doctor’s prescription.
How often does Spitex come for personal care?
As often as you need – we decide this together during the needs assessment. When needed, we are there around the clock, from Monday to Sunday.
Will I always be cared for by the same person?
We try to send the same carers to the same place whenever possible. Because our staff work part-time and are sometimes away on holiday, at training or ill, this is not always possible.
If you only need help around the home at regular intervals, planning for the same staff member is usually feasible.
Who obtains the aids and care supplies?
We take care of everything for you – as agreed with you.
Does Spitex Medimex care for children too?
Yes, there is no age limit.
Children and young people under 18 pay no patient contribution in the cantons of Zurich, Aargau and Schwyz.
